The Steamship ‘Sir Walter Scott’ is the only remaining steam powered propeller driven passenger ship still operating in the United Kingdom. (The National Trusts Gondola on Lake Coniston is a steam boat) Other ships still in existence were either built for another purpose or other surviving passenger ships have paddles.
Whilst many other countries have similar ships still operating, for example, Sweden has a fleet of historic ships, for which they have active support from their country, in the UK historic ships rely on the public for their funding.
Operating and maintaining a one hundred and ten 110 year old steamship is very expensive. A major refit over the past 3 winters has been carried out and additional funds are still needed to pay for this all and to keep the ship up to the standards required by the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to continue to issue its passenger carrying licence.
The Charity ‘The Friends of Sir Walter Scott’ has been established to allow enthusiast for original steam powered ships to help the Sir Walter Scott Trust financially in their efforts to keep this ship operational and carrying passengers on Loch Katrine, to experience the beauty of the scenery and to do so by silent steam power.
